Texas A&M University–Central Texas
Texas A&M University•Central Texas is a public university located in Killeen, Texas. It is one of the newest members of The Texas A&M University System. It was founded in 1999 as a branch of Tarleton State University. It became an independent branch of the Texas A&M University System effective in September 2009. A total 662 acres were donated to the university by the United States Army on Fort Hood in exchange for making classroom space available to the Army.[1][2] It is an upper-level only university, offering courses only to junior and senior level students transferring from junior colleges or other universities. The majority of the students attend part time. The average age is 32 and 23% of the students are military. The university currently has no campus buildings and leases space on the campus of the Central Texas College.[3] The first buildings should be completed in 2011[3] however there are no plans for student housing or sports teams.[4].
The Nursing program currently offered by Tarleton State University in Killeen is being discontinued, although Texas A&M•Central Texas is exploring the possibility of starting its own Nursing program. The new Nursing building being constructed on the campus of Central Texas College will be used by that institution following its completion.[5]
