Rains County, Texas
Rains County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 9,139. Its seat is Emory[1]. The county is named for Emory Rains, a Texas state legislator.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 259 square miles (670 km²), of which, 232 square miles (601 km²) of it is land and 27 square miles (69 km²) of it (10.36%) is water.

Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 9,139 people, 3,617 households, and 2,680 families residing in the county. The population density was 39 people per square mile (15/km²). There were 4,523 housing units at an average density of 20 per square mile (8/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.91% White, 2.92% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.55% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 5.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,617 households out of which 28.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% were married couples living together, 9.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% were non-families. 22.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $33,712, and the median income for a family was $40,329. Males had a median income of $31,983 versus $21,594 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,442. About 11.40% of families and 14.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.50% of those under age 18 and 14.10% of those age 65 or over.
Local media
Rains County is part of the Tyler/Longview/Jacksonville Television media market in Northeastern Texas. Local News media outlets are: KLTV, KYTX, KLPN-LP, KFXK, and KETK-TV. Although they are provided satellite television services, residents of Rains County are only allowed to view the Dallas/Fort Worth market stations, forcing some area residents to use television antennas to get local news and information on the Tyler/Longview/Jacksonville DMA channels.
