KTRE

KTRE is the ABC-affiliated television station for East Texas. It is licensed to Lufkin and owned by Raycom Media. It broadcasts a high definition digital signal on VHF channel 9 from a transmitter at their studios on TV Road in Pollok along U.S. 69. Although considered a separate station in its own right, it is a semi-satellite of KLTV in Tyler. It clears all of that station's syndicated programming but produces separate weeknight newscasts and airs its own commercials/station identifications.

History

KTRE signed-on August 31, 1955 by the owners of KTRE-AM 1420 (now defunct) as a satellite of Houston NBC affiliate KPRC-TV. However, it occasionally broke off to air programming from ABC and CBS. In 1964, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) collapsed Lufkin and Nacogdoches into the Tyler market. Soon afterward, the Buford family (owner of KLTV) bought KTRE and made it a satellite of that channel. Until 1984, the station had an unusual "joint primary" arrangement with all three networks slightly favoring ABC. Both stations lost CBS when KLMG-TV (now Fox affiliate KFXK) signed-on in 1984 but retained a secondary affiliation with NBC until KETK signed-on in 1987. Along with KLTV, it was sold to Civic Communications in the early 1990s. Civic merged with The Liberty Corporation in 2002 which in turn merged with Raycom in 2006.

For many years, this station operated at 26,000 watts from a tiny 540 foot tower being short-spaced to WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and later KETG-TV in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In the early-1980s, KTRE installed a new antenna and transmitter to increase power to 131 kilowatts but never reached full power because of the short-space interference it would cause to those other stations. On another front, the new transmitter antenna was directional to minimize overlap with KLTV to comply with FCC duopoly rules. KTRE is available on Suddenlink Communications in the area but not Dish Network or DirecTV because this region is part of the Tyler area. In June of 2010 the station reported it would soon be on DISH Network. The station is said to release a air date soon.

Its first news anchorman was Murphy Martin who later became a local television newsman in Dallas and anchorman for ABC News. KTRE simulcasts KLTV's weekday morning, midday, and weekend newscasts. In addition to its main studios, this station operates a bureau on North Street (U.S. 59 Business) in Nacogdoches.
