History

This channel's history began on September 18, 2006 when the main station created this subchannel to air a NOAA weather radar map. Prior to KTEN-DT3 becoming an ABC affiliate, KTEN was a primary ABC affiliate from its 1954 sign-on until the early 1990s when the station began taking on a larger proportion of NBC programming on its schedule and became a secondary ABC affiliate, later adding Fox as an additional secondary affiliation in 1994.

KTEN became an exclusive NBC affiliate in 1998, leaving the Sherman-Ada market as one of the only markets in the United States with affiliates of five of the six major broadcast networks (NBC, CBS, Fox, The CW and MyNetworkTV) but lacking an ABC affiliate by 2006, when KTEN and KXII added subchannels with affiliations with The CW and Fox and MyNetworkTV, respectively. WFAA for example, can be seen on cable and satellite subscriptions but not over-the-air because it is a VHF station that can rarely be seen over-the-air, even with amplified outdoor antennas.

Newscasts

ABC Texoma airs all national news broadcasts from ABC. It has also launched local newscasts with segments from ABC News. KTEN gets news clips from NBC, CNN, and ABC and it generally mixes its national news segments with all of its channels, regardless of affiliation. Currently, KTEN produces two half-hour local news broadcasts for KTEN-DT3; the subchannel airs these separate newscasts on weekdays at 4 p.m. and weekends at 5:30 p.m., while the main KTEN channel simulcast its newscasts on digital subchannel 10.3 on weekdays at 11 a.m., weeknights at 5 and every night at 10 p.m. All newscasts airing on KTEN-DT3 use the ABC Texoma News branding, which is separate from that of KTEN's primary channel; and the weekend newscasts can be delayed or preempted on one or both channels due to network programming obligations such as a sporting event or other program overrunning its end time. KTEN does not yet broadcast its local news in high definition.
