Jiquilpan, Michoacán
Jiquilpan (also spelled Xiuquilpan, Xiquilpan, Xiquilpa, based on a Náhuatl word for "place of tint plants") is a municipality (municipio) in the Mexican state of Michoacán. Its municipal seat is Jiquilpan de Juárez. It was the birthplace of Anastasio Bustamante, who served as President of the Republic on three occasions in the mid-19th century. It is also where hip-hop duo Akwid originated from, before moving to Los Angeles, California in their childhood. It has sister city exchange programs with Indio, California and Palmdale, California in the United States, where large numbers of residents from Jiquilpan relocated to in the 2000s. It is thought about half the population has familial relatives in Southern California. [citation needed] In the year 2000, the population was 25,778, but estimates can reach higher to 50,000 by the seasonal migrant laborers come and stay there.
