Cooper, Texas

Cooper (pronounced /ˈkʊpər/) is a city in Delta County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,150 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Delta County[3]. Cooper proclaims itself to be the "Vetch Capital of the World".

Geography

Cooper is located at 33° 22' 22" North, 95° 41' 21" West (33.372651, -95.689219)[4]. Elevation: 491 ft. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.8 km²), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²) of it is land and 0.69% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,150 people, 849 households, and 547 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,494.8 people per square mile (576.5/km²). There were 983 housing units at an average density of 683.4/sq mi (263.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.23% White, 15.58% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 2.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.95% of the population.

There were 849 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 81.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,400, and the median income for a family was $27,784. Males had a median income of $25,592 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,815. About 21.2% of families and 24.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.3% of those under age 18 and 24.3% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The City of Cooper is served by the Cooper Independent School District.
