Travel in Texas
If you are planning on driving to the Rio Grande Valley, keep in mind all drivers must be able to provide proper proof of insurance at any time. Texas law also requires that all passengers in the front seat wear seat belts. In addition, the law states that children under the age of two ride in child-restraining seats. Children from two to four years of age must ride in a child restraining seat or wear seat belts.
Drinking and Driving
It's never a good idea, of course, to drive after drinking alcohol. Texas law states that 0.1 percent or more alcohol blood content is the legal limit (due to possible Legislative changes, check with your local police department for current legal limits) and constitutes "driving while intoxicated" (DWI). This law pertains to any substance - including prescriptions, legal or illegal. Can I do that?
Slower traffic is required to stay in the right lane on multi-lane roads, unless passing slower traffic or preparing to turn left. Traffic is legally considered slower if it is traveling below the maximum speed limit; drivers of recreational vehicles especially should bear this in mind.A right turn on red, after a full stop yielding the right-of-way to all traffic to which you may pose a hazard, is permitted at intersections unless there is a sign indicating otherwise.
School Buses
If a school bus is preparing to stop or is already stopped with its red lights on, all traffic must stop on both sides of the road. You may proceed after the bus driver waves to approve passing traffic, the red lights are turned off, or if the bus starts moving.Peddling and Walking
Motorists and cyclists ride in harmony with the help of a few rules. Bicycles are required to abide by all traffic laws. When riding at night or in a situation where visibility is less than 1,000 feet a red tail light and a rear reflector are required by law. When walking or riding, especially at night, it's always a good idea to wear reflective clothing or strips of reflective tape on clothing.Cyclists should stay off of sidewalks to avoid accidents with pedestrians. Where there is no sidewalk, it is safest for pedestrians to walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. (Walkers' tip: Many find that walking inside shopping malls before the shops open -most open at 10 a.m. - is safer, cooler and altogether easier than hitting the streets for exercise. Many city parks and schools have tracks that are popular with walkers, some even with exercise stations.)
